The Supreme Court recently granted bail to Kejriwal in connection with the CBI case filed against him concerning the now-defunct liquor excise policy scam. Justice Sanjiv Khanna, while delivering the court's decision, stated, “He is the Chief Minister of a state and the elected leader. Considering his right to life and liberty and the fact that he has been in jail for over 90 days, we are of the view that Kejriwal is entitled to be released”.
The Delhi High Court, recently, issued notice to the Union in a petition filed by Aam Aadmi Party seeking directions for the allocation of residential accommodation for Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of the party.
The bench of Justice Sanjeev Narula recorded their submissions and listed the matter for 26th November 2024.
They requested a residence in a centrally located area of New Delhi, citing Rule 26(iii) of Office Memorandum No. 12014/2/96-Pol. II (Vol. II). The rule stipulated that a recognized National Party’s President could retain one residential accommodation provided no other lodging has been allocated to the individual in any other capacity.
Senior Advocate Rahul Mehra, for AAP, argued that all conditions specified in the memorandum were met. He highlighted that AAP had already submitted a request for the allocation on 20th September 2024, followed by a reminder on 27th September 2024, addressed to the Respondents.
The court issued a notice to Standing Counsel Apoorv Kurup. The court further directed the Union to file a counter affidavit within two weeks, with an additional week allocated to AAP to submit a rejoinder if needed.
