Synopsis

A legal battle ensued over the estate of renowned fashion designer Rohit Bal, who passed away on 1st November 2024. A petition was filed by Lalit Tehlan, a close friend of Bal, seeking the grant of Letters of Administration concerning Bal’s estate, based on an unregistered Will dated 30th October 2023.

The Delhi High Court, recently, ordered status quo on the assets of Designer Rohit Bal, who passed away on November 1, 2025. The bench of Justice Anish Dayal further issued directions for the inventorization of movable assets noting that, “considering there is an apprehension of dissipation of assets of the testator, the Court deems it fit to issue directions for inventorization of the movable assets”.

Tehlan also filed an application seeking an ex-parte ad interim injunction against Bal’s step-brother and step-sister. The application was filed after Tehlan discovered that the locks to the Defence Colony property had been changed following Bal’s demise. He alleged that Bal’s step-siblings had deployed security guards to prevent his access. Fearing that step-siblings might unlawfully seize the estate, Tehlan sought necessary legal directions.

Senior Advocate Sanjeev Kakra, representing Tehlan, argued that Bal had duly signed and executed the Will in the presence of two attesting witnesses, Akhilesh Sharma and Deepak Panwar, both of whom had signed the document and submitted their affidavits as proof. He further contended that Bal was unmarried and had no Class-I or Class-II legal heirs.

The petition stated that Bal had bequeathed all his movable and immovable properties, including his Defence Colony residence and shareholding in M/s Rohit Bal Designs Pvt. Ltd., to Tehlan. It was further submitted that Tehlan was the exclusive owner and possessor of the Defence Colony property and had served as one of the directors of the fashion company.

In response, the court ordered a status quo regarding the movable and immovable assets listed in Schedule A of the petition, preventing any dissipation of Bal’s estate. The court further listed the matter for March 26, 2025.
