Justice Ganju’s Emotional Farewell: “If You Cry, I Cry Too”

Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju told her daughter, “Don’t cry, if you cry, I cry,” during her heartfelt farewell.

The Delhi High Court witnessed an emotional moment on Monday as Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju bid farewell to the court following her transfer to the Karnataka High Court.

During the ceremony, Justice Ganju was visibly moved as she addressed her family and colleagues. Seeing her daughter in tears, she gently said, “Don’t cry, if you cry, I cry."

Expressing heartfelt gratitude to her family, Justice Ganju said, “I am deeply grateful to my family, my mother who is here, and my daughter, for their constant support, patience and understanding. The life of a judge often demands long hours of solitude, yet they have stood by me uncomplainingly, giving me peace of mind to discharge my duties with integrity.”

Reflecting on the demands of judicial life, she said, “I am conscious that working late or overtime has sometimes invited criticism or misunderstanding, yet I have never regarded diligence as a fault. The demands of justice do not always keep to the clock. Our foremost duty must remain to the litigants who seek relief. Personal comfort or even the risk of disapproval cannot outweigh the obligation we owe to the cause of justice.”

Justice Ganju described the judiciary as not merely an arbiter of disputes but as the guardian of the constitutional promise of liberty, equality and justice for all. She said that the confidence of the people in the judiciary is its greatest strength and must always be preserved.

As she prepared to take up her new assignment, Justice Ganju said, “I carry with me the lessons and memories of this court. Change is an inseparable part of life, but saying goodbye to this institution stirs deep emotions. This court has shaped not only my career but also my understanding of justice. My years here have been among the most fulfilling, and I hope to continue serving the cause of justice in the same spirit and dedication that the Delhi High Court embodies.”

Thanking her colleagues and members of the Bar for their affection and goodwill, Justice Ganju concluded her address by saying, “Every ending carries the promise of return. It is not a goodbye but a pause, not a conclusion. Until we see each other again.”

During the ceremony, Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya praised Justice Ganju for her ability to grasp the core issues in every matter before her. He expressed confidence that her posting in Karnataka would offer her new opportunities to experience diverse litigation and litigants in a different cultural setting.

Court also bid farewell to Justice Arun Monga, who has been transferred to the Rajasthan High Court.

Justice Monga was elevated to the Delhi High Court on July 21, 2025, while Justice Ganju was appointed to the Bench on May 18, 2022. The Central Government notified their transfers on October 14, 2025.
