Court gave the direction while considering an application filed in a contempt plea by the NGO "Bachpan Bachao Andolan".
The Delhi High Court has asked the deputy labour commissioner and additional labour commissioner to appear in person in a case involving the prevention of the 'exploitation of domestic workers' employed through private placement agencies in the national capital.
Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora said, “Learned counsel for the respondents states that in addition to deputy commissioner, it would be appropriate to call the additional labour commissioner since he has the supervisory control over all the districts. The said statement is taken on record. The additional labour commissioner is directed to remain present in court along with the deputy labour commissioner, on the next date of hearing.”
The court gave the direction while considering an application filed in a contempt plea by the NGO "Bachpan Bachao Andolan", which claimed that there had been "complete wilful disobedience and non-compliance" with a September 30, 2014, high court order.
The order was related to action against unregulated and unregistered placement agencies, which are directly causing incidents "where a minor girl is rescued from abject torture and diabolical treatment every few months."
The court issued notice and sought response from the authorities within one week in the plea seeking direction to the Delhi government to take steps forthwith in a time-bound manner to shut down all unregistered and unlicensed placement agencies.
Furthermore, the court also directed the respondent authorities to file a status report on the working of the e-district portal. The matter is listed for further hearing on May 26, 2023 at 3:30 pm.
