An anticipatory bail plea has been moved by Swapna Suresh, the prime accused in a Gold smuggling case before the Kerala High Court, in connection with the conspiracy case registered against her on the complaint filed by MLA and former Minister KT Jaleel.

On a complaint by Jaleel, the Thiruvanthapuram cantonment police had registered a case against Suresh on June 8, 2022. The complaint sought a probe into the charges made against Suresh in the gold smuggling case and alleged that she conspired and made defaming statements against him.

The police had booked Suresh under Section 153 (wantonly giving provocation with an intent to cause riot) and Section 120B (criminal conspiracy).

Recently, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) interrogated Suresh concerning her Section 164 statements at the court against Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan and his family for almost five and half hours each day.

The Kerala Gold smuggling case pertains to the smuggling of gold in the state through diplomatic channels. It was in light after 30kg gold worth Rs. 14.82 crore was smuggled in a consignment camouflaged as diplomatic baggage was busted by the customs department in Thiruvananthapuram on July 5, 2019.

Last year, the Kerala High Court granted bail to Suresh, Sarith P.S., and others in the sensational Kerala gold smuggling case where Suresh and others faced charges by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
