[Jamaat-Ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh Case] NIA files supplementary chargesheet against accused before Special Court Bhopal

Synopsis

The case pertains to the arrest of ten active cadres of the proscribed terrorist organization Jamaat-Ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), including six illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has filed supplementary chargesheet before NIA Special Court, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh in a case involving the arrest of ten active cadres of the proscribed terrorist organization Jamaat-Ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), including six illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

The accused person namely, Ali Asgar @ Abdullah Bihari @ Umair has been chargesheeted under Sections 120B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC and Sections 13 (Punishment for unlawful activities), 18 (Conspiracy), 20(Punishment for being a member of terrorist gang or organization), 38 (Offence relating to membership of a terrorist organization), and 39 (Offence relating to support given to a terrorist organization) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The NIA Investigations have revealed that the accused, Ali Asgar @ Abdullah Bihari @ Umair, was "deeply influenced by the ideology of various proscribed terrorist organizations in the Indian Subcontinent, such as JMB and Al Qaeda", to expand its activities in India. He and his associates formed a criminal conspiracy to persuade, radicalize, and motivate Indian Muslims to prepare for violent jihad against the Indian state.

“In pursuance of the said criminal conspiracy, accused Ali Asgar translated Jihadi literature from Urdu/ Arabic to Hindi and uploaded it on social media groups for its circulation amongst impressionable Muslims”, the federal agency’s press release read.

Furthermore, the investigations have revealed that the accused was involved in sowing discontent against India through false and distorted preachings that democracy was anti-Islamic and that Muslims were being persecuted in India because of democracy.

As per the NIA, the case was initially registered on March 14, 2023, at Special Task Force, Police Station, Bhopal, and later re-registered by NIA on April 5, 2022. NIA had earlier filed a chargesheet against 6 accused on September 7, 2022.
