Supreme Court Judge Hrishikesh Roy on Friday lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making endeavors to focus his attention on securing a justice system catering To All Segments of Society

“Sri Narendra Modi who besides making endeavour to transform India into a developed nation has also focused his attention towards securing a justice system which is not only simple but also caters to all segments of society. The Prime Minister in the confidence of Chief ministers and the Chief Justices of the high Courts at Vidyan Bhavan in Delhi in April last year, significantly said that we are trying to ensure that in the coming days there is not only a complete legal terminology for the laws in a country but also a simpler version of the same laws in a language well understood by the common man. Such efforts in my estimation are an important steps towards access to justice as was spoken by Dr ambedkar the Founding Father of the Indian Constitution,” Justice Roy said.

Justice Roy highlighted the diversity of judges by emphasizing that they come from various parts of the country and have the opportunity to learn about different cultures. As an example, he greeted Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria and Gauhati High Court Chief Justice Sandeep Mehta in Marwari, which is their native language in Rajasthan. He also greeted the Prime Minister in Gujarati to showcase another language and cultural aspect of the judiciary.

The Supreme Court judge was speaking at the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Gauhati High Court in Guwahati on Friday.

Moreover, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech said artificial intelligence is being used in the legal field.

“Artificial Intelligence is also being used in the legal field. We have to also make courts easier for the general public through AI for the ease of justice”, said the Prime Minister.

In his speech, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the inclusion in the Union Budget of a provision to allocate funds for undertrials who have been held in custody for a long time and are unable to pay their bail bonds. He emphasized that many of these undertrials are poor and have been imprisoned for minor offenses, leading to overcrowding in jails. The budgetary allocation aims to address this issue by providing funds to states to help release these undertrials from jail, he said.
