Synopsis

The association has called for a ban on the practice of judges’ close relatives in the same court, citing concerns over conflicts of interest

The High Court Bar Association, Allahabad has escalated its protest against the transfer of Justice Yashwant Varma and alleged corruption in the judiciary. In a General Assembly meeting on March 26, 2025, the association passed a series of resolutions, reaffirming its decision to continue boycotting judicial work and taking disciplinary action against advocates who violated the protest.

The association declared that all advocates practicing in the high court will abstain from work.

This decision follows its earlier resolution to oppose the Supreme Court collegium’s order transferring Justice Varma. The association has demanded the immediate cancellation of his transfer, arguing that it undermines judicial integrity.

Additionally, the association has called for a ban on the practice of judges’ close relatives in the same court, citing concerns over conflicts of interest.

It has also demanded urgent changes to the case listing system, advocating for a fairer approach where older cases are given priority over fresh filings.

Moreover, the association has taken disciplinary action against advocates who appeared in court despite the boycott. Those who defied the resolution have had their membership suspended with immediate effect and have been served show-cause notices. They have been given two working days to provide an explanation, failing which their membership may be permanently revoked, and the association will request the high court to remove them from the advocate roll.

This action follows the suspension of an advocate on March 25, 2025, for appearing before Court No. 47 and misbehaving with association officials when asked to comply with the protest. The association has now extended its crackdown, warning that any further violations will not be tolerated.
