Synopsis

Javed Akhtar's complaint said that his name was needlessly dragged into an unconnected sensitive matter.

Actress Kangana Ranaut on Monday appeared before the Metropolitan Magistrate's court in a criminal defamation complaint filed against her by lyricist Javed Akhtar for making statements against him in an interview with Republic TV in connection with actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case.

In this complaint filed in November 2020, the lyricist stated that Kangana made comments in an interview to Republic TV on 20 July, 2020 wherein she called him part of a certain “gang” in context of late actor Sushant Singh Rajput death case. Akhtar further stated about the social media trolling he faced as a result of her allegations.

His complaint stated that his name had been needlessly dragged into an unconnected sensitive matter. The incident described by Kangana in the interview never took place, he said and added that she chose to defame him to amplify her public presence.

Earlier, the Court had rejected actor Kangana Ranaut’s application for permanent exemption from attending the defamation proceedings of the lyricist.

As per that order, the court assured that the actor would be exempted in specific situations if needed, by consent of both sides.
