Lucknow court sentences Congress leader Raj Babbar Two Years imprisonment in 26-year-old case; interim bail granted

Synopsis

As per the prosecution case, Babbar, who was the then candidate for parliamentary elections on a Samajwadi Party ticket in Lucknow, along with his supporters, entered the polling place and assaulted officials on duty.

A Lucknow MP/MLA court on Thursday sentenced Bollywood actor and Congress leader Raj Babbar to two years in prison in a case involving the assault of a polling officer.

The case dates back to the year 1996 when one polling officer Shri Krishna Singh Rana filed a report at City's Wazirganj police station against many people, including Raj Babbar alleging that Babbar, who was the then candidate for parliamentary elections on a Samajwadi Party ticket in Lucknow, with his supporters entered the polling place on May 2, 1996 and assaulted people on duty.

The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 6,500 on him.

Following an investigation, a chargesheet was filed in court against Raj Babbar and co-accused Arvind Yadav under sections 143, 332, 353, 323, 504, 188 IPC, Representation of the People Act, and 7 Criminal Law Amendment Act. On Thursday, the Lucknow MP MLA Court gave its decision held Babbar guilty of for assaulting government officers and preventing them from discharging their official duty.

Another co-accused in the case, Arvind Singh Yadav died during the Trial. Babbar had lost the 1996  election to Bhartiya Janta Party's Atal Bihari Bajpayee. 

Babbar joined the Janata Dal under the leadership of VP Singh in 1989 and after that, he joined the Samajwadi Party and got elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004. Later, he was suspended from SP in 2006 and joined Congress in 2008.
