Madras HC issues bailable warrants against two IAS Officers over non-appearance

The Madras High Court had earlier issued Statutory Notice for the appearance of the officers

A single judge bench of the Madras High Court has issued bailable warrants against two IAS officers over their failure to appear in court in connection with a custodial torture case.

Justice Battu Devanand has further directed the Commissioner of Police, Chennai, to secure the presence of the two by next date of hearing before the Court.

"Issue Bailable Warrant to the respondents 1 and 2. The Commissioner of Police, Chennai, is directed to secure the presence of the respondents 1 and 2 by next date of hearing before this Court. Post on 11.09.2023", states the order.

Notably, the High Court had issued Statutory Notice for the appearance of the two officers on July 31, 2023.

A dispense with petitions were filed as applications on behalf of the two officers, and the Senior Counsel appearing for them submitted before Court that they could not be present before the Court because they were having a meeting with a Minister.

"This Court is unable to accept that reason", said Justice Devanand while dismissing the Sub applications.

In this case, a 17-year-old boy who passed away as a result of alleged custodial torture by the Police.
