POSH Act| 1047 Nodal Officers Appointed Across State: TN Govts tells Madras HC

Synopsis

Section 5 of the POSH Act provides for 'notification of District Officer' and states that the appropriate Government may notify a District Magistrate or Additional District Magistrate or the Collector or Deputy Collector as a District Officer for every District to exercise powers or discharge functions under the Act

The Tamil Nadu Government has recently submitted before the Madras High Court that 1047 Nodal Officers have been appointed across the State as per the requirement under Section 5 of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH Act).

Before the division bench of Acting Chief Justice R Mahadevan and Justice Mohammed Shaffiq, the Department of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment placed on record a status report which categorically stated that 1047 Nodal Officers have been appointed till now.

One S.Periyasamy filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) before the high court seeking direction to the State authorities to appoint designated Nodal officers under Section 5 of the POSH Act in every Block, Taluk and Tehsil in rural or tribal area and ward or municipality in the urban area.

When the matter was taken up last week, a status report was filed by the respondent State Govt. As per the report, the District Officers have appointed 92 Nodal Officers in Revenue Divisions, 289 Nodal Officers in Taluk, 350 Nodal Officers in the Block Offices, 55 Nodal Officers have been appointed in Corporation Zones, 19 Nodal Officers have been assigned in the Wards, 128 Nodal Officers were appointed in the Municipalities, 114 Nodal Officers have been appointed in the Town Panchayat totaling to 1047 Nodal Officers.

In view of the same, since the grievance ventilated by the petitioner stood redressed, court disposed of the petition.
