A committee examining the feasibility of holding election to all Bar Associations in the national capital on a single day on Wednesday told the Delhi High Court that a meeting took place yesterday i.e. on September 5.

The committee sought two to three weeks time for further deliberation.

Court was hearing a plea filed by advocates pertaining to the issue of holding a “uniform election” in one day for all the Bar Associations in the national capital.

“It has been brought to the notice of this court, that a meeting of the committee had taken place on September 5 and further deliberations are required. List after two weeks”, the division bench of CJ Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Sanjeev Narula said.

The matter will be heard next on September 25, 2023.

On July 28, the High Court had formed a committee headed by one of its judges to examine the feasibility of holding an election to all Bar Associations in the national capital on a single day.

The bench had asked the committee to submit a report on the issues of preparation of ID cards for lawyers and radio frequency tag/sticker for their vehicles.

“… a committee is being constituted by this court under Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva as the Chairperson, Justice Jasmeet Singh, Justice Manoj Jain, K K Manan, Chairman Bar Council of Delhi, Mohit Mathur, President of Delhi High Court Bar Association and Chairman of Coordination Committee of All District Bar Associations of Delhi, as its members”, the bench had said in its order dated July 28.

Court was then apprised that every lawyer is required to vote in the Bar elections, and therefore there is a necessity for preparation of a proper ID Card for lawyers.

The division bench had said, “The Committee is requested to submit a report in respect of preparation of I. D. Card for lawyers, Radio Frequency Tag/Sticker in respect of vehicles of lawyers and for holding uniform election in respect of all Bar Councils in one day. The Committee is requested to submit a report positively within four weeks”.
