A month later when the case was heard on December 9 the court was informed there were certain disagreements between the parties and the matter could not be resolved through settlement. Therefore, they asked the court to allow mediation conducted by a judge.

On the request of the parties, the court allowed mediation and listed the matter for the next hearing on 21 January 2025.

The case pertains to a complaint filed by Akhtar against Ranaut in response to certain comments made by her during an interview on Republic TV in which she made remarks about a 2016 meeting between herself and Akhtar. Akhtar subsequently filed an application in Sessions Court. The Sessions Court stayed criminal proceedings against Akhtar until his revision application before the sessions court was heard.

Recently, the Bombay High Court rejected the petition filed by Ranaut which sought a stay on the defamation proceedings initiated by lyricist Javed Akhtar.
