The Special Court granted bail to Salil Deshmukh in the PMLA case after noting that he had not been arrested in the PMLA case till date
Judge R.N Rokde of the Special PMLA Court has granted bail to Salil Deshmukh, son of the former home minister and NCP leader Anil Deshmukh in the money laundering case. Salil was granted bail in the PMLA case on furnishing a bail bond of Rs. 3 Lakh
Anil Deshmukh and Salil Deshmukh are facing criminal prosecution in the money laundering case registered against them by the Enforcement Directorate. Salil was summoned by the special court in February when the court took cognizance of the charge sheet filed by the Enforcement Directorate.
Salil Deshmukh had contended that the accusation against him is completely unfounded and that he was never arrested by the ED till date and that he has also cooperated in the investigation. Further, it was also argued that the accusation against him was not of relating to criminal activity of a scheduled offense and therefore cannot be proceeds of crime and money laundering.
He also relied on the order of the High Court in which Anil Deshmukh was granted bail wherein it was stated that none of the properties were derived from proceeds of crime.
The ED opposed the bail application arguing that he was summoned by ED twice but he did not appear. Further, they also argued that the applicant appeared in court for the first time after the summons was issued in February 2022.
The Special Court has granted bail to Salil, however, Anil Deshmukh is in judicial custody in the corruption case lodged against him by the Central Bureau of Investigation. The High Court will hear his bail plea in the CBI case after Diwali Vacation
