Synopsis

The Delhi Police, on Tuesday, brought forth an extensive chargesheet encompassing a staggering 8,000 pages before Patiala House Court, implicating Prabir Purkayastha and his media platform, NewsClick. 

According to the voluminous chargesheet, Purkayastha played a central role in the clandestine funneling of finances towards endeavors construed to be sympathetic to terrorist activities. This exhaustive document, spanning a prodigious 8,000 pages, unfurls a web of associations connecting him with outlawed outfits like Lashkar-e-Taiba. Notably, it alleges that NewsClick served as a conduit for a substantial sum amounting to ₹91 crore, ostensibly earmarked for sinister purposes.

Moreover, the accusations extend into the realm of information dissemination, painting a portrait of a concerted effort to manipulate facts and disseminate misinformation. Purkayastha stands accused of tampering with maps, expunging crucial portions of India's territorial integrity while seemingly aligning with Chinese territorial claims. This alleged manipulation, coupled with a purported campaign of malicious disinformation, purportedly aimed to skew public opinion on contentious issues like the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

In a bid to exacerbate societal rifts, the chargesheet alleges Purkayastha's orchestration of events that precipitated the farmers' protests and the turbulent riots that engulfed Delhi in 2020. Concurrently, NewsClick stands accused of mobilizing masses against legislative measures, fostering discord through its editorial stance.

Furthermore, Purkayastha faces allegations of conspiring to disseminate misinformation concerning COVID-19 vaccines, purportedly collaborating with figures like Neville Roy Singham to disparage vaccines produced by Indian pharmaceutical firms. Additionally, the Delhi Police assert uncovering links between Purkayastha and the Communist Party of India (Maoist), suggesting a nexus fueling subversive activities.

Central to the prosecution's argument is the specter of Chinese influence pervading NewsClick's operations. The chargesheet suggests substantial funds were injected into the platform, ostensibly to propagate Chinese propaganda, raising profound concerns regarding journalistic ethics and independence.

While the Patiala House Court has acknowledged the chargesheet, scheduling the matter for adjudication on May 31, the Supreme Court raised pertinent questions regarding the Delhi Police Special Cell's expeditious arrest of Purkayastha. 

Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Purkayastha, had contended before the court that his client's arrest was ‘illegitimate’ and lacked adequate grounds.
