Synopsis

According to families and tribal activists, stress from social pressures, harassment over inter-community relationships, and rising liquor and sex rackets contribute to these suicides

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the rise in suicides among tribal people living on the outskirts of Thiruvananthapuram district. In 2024 alone, 23 such cases have been reported, raising concerns about systemic issues affecting the tribal population.

Between 2011 and 2022, an estimated 138 suicides occurred, with the majority concentrated in Peringammala Panchayat. After a temporary lull, this disturbing trend appears to be resurfacing, as highlighted in recent news coverage dated December 25, 2024. The media reports also revealed that most victims were aged between 20 and 30, with families and activists attributing these tragedies to social pressures, harassment related to relationships outside the community, and the rise of illicit liquor and sex rackets.

The NHRC observed that if the reports are true, they reveal a serious violation of the right to life and other rights of Scheduled Tribes in the region. Stressing the state’s obligation to protect its citizens, particularly vulnerable groups, the Commission described the situation as a matter requiring immediate attention from the government agencies.

In response, the Commission has issued notices to Kerala's Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, demanding a comprehensive report. The comprehensive report is expected to include the status of the FIRs registered in the issues as well as the arrest of the perpetrators. The Commission would also like to know the status of compensation, if any provided to the Next of Kin of the deceased persons. The state government is also expected to inform about the steps taken/proposed to ensure such incidents do not recur. The response from the authorities is expected within two weeks.
