Chandrashekhar Azad Park, earlier known as Alfred Park, is a public park in Prayagraj, UP and a PIL was filed last year alleging that illegal construction has been raised within the park area.

The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday ordered the State Government to prepare a fresh layout plan of the Amar Chandrashekhar Azad Park in Prayagraj District.

Court rejected the layout plan devised by a private Land Surveyor Project Consulting Engineer stating that he was not aware of the procedure as to how a layout plan is prepared showing the legends.

Court said, "As to why a private Surveyor was engaged by the State is not known to the learned counsel for the State....The place where Shahid Chandrashekhar Azad laid down his life is not even pointed out in the plan".

Therefore, directing for a fresh plan, the bench of Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice JJ Munir suggested that the counsel assisting the Court in the present Public Interest Litigation (PIL) may also carry out some search as to whether any Ph.D. Degrees have been awarded on the part of the freedom struggle at Allahabad so that consulting the specialists, significant events, places could be showcased in the park.

Moreover, Court directed the Registrar General to coordinate with the Public Library Allahabad, Government Museums and the Public Library at Nainital for getting copies of the news items published in various newspapers in which reference has been made to significant historical events in the history of Prayagraj.

"The In-charge of the aforesaid Museums and Libraries are directed to assist in supplying the copies thereof, without any delay," Court ordered.

The matter will be next heard on September 1, 2022.

The PIL was filed last year for the removal of illegal encroachment within the area of historical Amar Shaheed Chandrasekhar Aazad Park in Prayagraj. On July 13, 2022, the High Court directed the State Government to place before the Court a complete layout plan of this Park which was tabled on Tuesday.

In 1931 Chandra Shekhar Azad, an Indian freedom fighter and associate of Shaheed Bhagat Singh laid down his life in this park in a confrontation with the British police. This park was earlier known as Alfred Park.
