A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in Calcutta High Court seeking services in the Bengali language in all banks across the state.

The petition has been filed by Bengali Nationalist Organization, Bangla Pokkho Charitable Trust - an organization which claims to have carried out deputation drive across in banks across Bengal.

According to Kaushik Maiti, member of the organization, following reasons have been cited by Bangla Pokkho for the petition:

1. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) master circular of 2014/2015 which stipulates the use of vernacular languages in banks.
2. The 2011 census which records that there are 86% Bengalis in Bengal with 82% Bengalis being monolingual.

The petitioners are represented by Advocates Prasenjit Debnath, Poonam Basu and Sagnik Bhattacharya.
