Synopsis

The petition states that the scheme was introduced by the government only with the objective of gaining fruitful benefits for the assembly election in October 2024

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Bombay High Court challenging the Mukhya Mantri Ladki Bahin Yojana (Chief Minister's Beloved Sister Scheme) announced by the Maharashtra State Government.

The PIL has been filed by a Navi Mumbai-based Chartered Accountant challenging the scheme, which promises Rs. 1500 per month to all women between the age group of 21-60 years who are married, widowed, divorced, abandoned, or without support.

The PIL states that Maharashtra is already under debt, which is projected at a steep ₹7.8 lakh crores.

The plea added that the finance department had expressed concern about the Ladki Behan Yojna in view of the state's financial condition. Despite this, the Cabinet passed it with a clear political motive, as the state assembly polls are due in October 2024.

The petition states that the scheme was introduced by the government only with the objective of gaining fruitful benefits for the assembly election in October 2024.

"That the present government had taken this step as only an aftermath after losing the Lok Sabha 2024 polls only securing 18 seats out of total 48 seats. Therefore, the questions here is the timing for introducing & implementation of the impugned schemes with only objectives and eying the fruitful benefits for the upcoming assembly polls those are due in the month of September-October 2024," the plea states.

The PIL was mentioned by Advocate Owais Pechkar today before the division bench of Chief Justice Devendra Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar for urgent listing on Monday.

However, the bench said that the PIL would be auto-listed.
