Read Time: 02 minutes

Synopsis

The PIL stated that deep fake videos constituted a source of misinformation and needed to be restricted within 24 hours of being uploaded to minimize harm, particularly during election campaigning

Recently, a public interest litigation was initiated by a group of lawyers through Senior Advocate Jayanti Mehta, in the Delhi High Court. The plea was filed seeking direction against the Election Commission of India (ECI) to intervene and halt the dissemination of deep fake videos during the ongoing Lok Sabha Elections.

The bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet PS Arora listed the matter for Thursday, May 2 for further adjudication.

The plea came after a recent video featuring Union Home Minister Amit Shah and another one featuring Actor Ranvir Singh went viral. During the brief court session, Senior Advocate Mehta expressed grave concerns over the circulation of these deceptive videos, highlighting the significant challenge of promptly removing them once they're published. He emphasized that these videos contribute to a narrative of misinformation.

Moreover, Senior Advocate Mehta highlighted the existing legal framework within the Information Technology Act for tackling such offenses. However, he observed that legal proceedings were time-consuming in combating these crimes. He stressed the importance of addressing such threats within a 24-hour timeframe to mitigate ongoing damage.

Recognizing the intricacies of technology, Acting Chief Justice Manmohan remarked on the challenges presented by deepfake videos.
