Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the fifth anniversary of the Parliament's decision to abrogate Articles 370 and 35-A on August 5, 2024, describing it as a watershed moment that ushered in a new era of progress and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi said, "We mark 5 years since the Parliament of India decided to abrogate Articles 370 and 35(A), a watershed moment in our nation's history. It was the start of a new era of progress and prosperity in Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh."

PM Modi highlighted the significance of the abrogation, stating that it led to the implementation of the Constitution of India in letter and spirit, benefiting marginalized communities, including women, youth, and tribal communities, who were previously deprived of development opportunities.

He also emphasised that the abrogation has helped curb corruption, which had plagued Jammu and Kashmir for decades. PM Modi assured the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh that his government will continue working towards fulfilling their aspirations in the coming times.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also marked the occasion, hailing the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35-A as a transformative decision that has ushered in a new era of empowerment for marginalized sections and strengthened grassroots democracy in Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

Shah credited PM Modi's leadership for the historic decision, saying it has driven socio-economic growth and cultural revival in the region. "The region's youth have been at the forefront of this transformation, making the Modi government's efforts to foster peace and comprehensive development a grand success," he said.

Shah thanked PM Modi for the landmark decision and reaffirmed his dedication to advancing the region's aspirations and transformative progress.

Article 370, along with Article 35A, were abrogated by way of Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which was passed by the Parliament on August 5, 2019 and came into force on October 31, 2019. This act revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and reorganised the erstwhile state into two union territories, namely Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. The abrogation was challenged before the Supreme Court, which on December 11, 2023 upheld the revocation holding that the Article 370 was a temporary provision, and the government’s move was to enhance constitutional integration and not disintegration.
