A Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Sachin Datta, disposed off a plea against Akshay Kumar starring in the movie titled "Samrat Prithviraj" for allegedly depicting the ruler as a Rajput King.
The plea claimed that Prithviraj Chauhan was in fact a Gurjar King and not a Rajput King. This comes as the film is set to release in theatres on June 3.
The plea was filed by 'Gurjar Same Sarv Sangthan Sabha Ekta Samanya Samiti' and claimed that the film is based on the book 'Prithviraj Raise', which was the composition of a famous Indian poet, Chand Bardai Barot.
The plea cited articles and discourses, including the Wikipedia page of the movie, which was allegedly promoted by the producers o the movie to depict Prithviraj Chauhan as a Rajput ruler.
ASG Chetan Sharma, who appeared for the Central Board of Film Certification informed the court that the movie does not portray the ruler as either a Rajput or Gurjar. Moreover, the counsel for Yashraj Films contended that various posts on different websites in relation to the movie, describing Prithviraj Chauhan, as a Rajput King were not made or put up by them
The Court asked the respondents as to why they cant simply issue a statement clarifying that Prithviraj Chauhan was not a Rajput King? However, the counsel for Yash Raj Films responded that the production house wished to keep the film as caste neutral as possible.
He also claimed that the film has become a scapegoat in clashes between different communities. He referred to the Karni Sena's challenge to the film before the Allahabad High Court, claiming that the film's title offends religious sentiments.
Counsel for the Petitioners submitted that if the movie is caste-neutral, his grievance stands resolved and he does not wish to press the petition any further.
The plea was, accordingly, dismissed.
