Synopsis

A bench of Justice Anil Menon and Justice MS Karnik said that on open fields throughout the state, many kids and adults play cricket and other sports.

The Bombay High Court on Monday directed the Maharashtra Cricket Association, Board of Control for Cricket in India, and Maharashtra Government to provide basic facilities on the public grounds. The High Court said that the next big star might come from these public grounds.

A bench of Justice Anil Menon and Justice MS Karnik said that on open fields throughout the state, many kids and adults play cricket and other sports. Most of these venues lacked even the most basic amenities, whether they were run by civic organisations or cricket associations.

The direction has been passed in a Public Interest Litigation plea filed by Advocate Rahul Tiwari appearing in person. Tiwari had argued that these public grounds are booked for practice and cricket matches in exchange for a fee, however, most of these grounds still lack basic facilities like clean drinking water, toilets, etc.

Whereas, the counsel appearing for MCA and BCCI informed the bench that most of the grounds come under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation.

The counsel further informed the bench that whenever grounds are booked for matches, several requests for providing basic facilities have been denied.

The bench has asked MCA and BCCI to submit this before the court on affidavit. The bench further said that instant case should not be treated as adversarial litigation.
