'Real-Time Passenger Information System Almost Revolutionary': Meghalaya HC Lauds Govt's Initiative to Enable Parents to Track School Buses

Read Time: 04 minutes

Synopsis

The court was informed that an App will be circulated to the parents of school-going children to enable them to follow, in real-time, the location of the school buses.

The Meghalaya High Court recently held the initiatives taken by the state government in Shillong to ease the traffic situation commendable.

While taking note of certain immediate, short-term, mid-term, and long-term proposals as indicated in a status report filed by the state government, the bench of Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice W. Diengdoh appreciated the state government's decision to procure a large number of buses for ferrying school children.

The state counsel had informed the court that CCTVs have been fitted in the buses and an App has been circulated or will be circulated to the parents for the parents to follow, in real-time, the location of the buses and what may be going on inside such buses.

Court said that though the parents, being concerned with the security of the school-going children, particularly girls, may not be inclined to allow them to use buses or public transport, this Real-Time Passenger Information System, is almost revolutionary.

"...should allay all the misgivings a concerned parent or guardian may have as to the security of the school-going child travelling in a bus," court highlighted.

Court, however, said that other measures also are needed to be adopted to ease the congestion on the roads, whether by building roads, parking lots, making one-way streets or other forms of regulation.

"...if the proposed flyover between Rilbong and Jhalupara materialises, a lot of the traffic congestion at the entry point of Shillong would have been eased," observed the court while asking the State to continue the good effort in this regard.

The order was passed in a PIL filed pertaining to the traffic situation in the city of Shillong. The matter will be next taken up on July 7, 2023.
