Synopsis

Kannan was granted bail on the condition that he files an affidavit promising not to make such inflammatory speeches in the future.

The Madras High Court on Thursday granted bail to a stunt choreographer and a functionary of the Hindu Munnani, Kanal Kannan for making controversial remarks against rationalist and Dravidian ideologue E.V.R. Periyar, reports the Indian Express.

Justice G K Ilanthiraiyan granted Kannan bail on the condition that he would appear twice a day or four weeks before the investigating officer and directed him to file an affidavit stating that he would not make such provocative speeches in the future.

Last month, Kannan sparked a controversy when he delivered a provocative speech at a public meeting organized by the Hindu Munnani in Maduravoyal, calling for the removal of a Periyar statue near the Sri Ranganathaswamy temple in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu's Tiruchirappalli district.

A video of Kannan criticizing Periyar went viral on social media, prompting political parties such as the Dravidar Kazhagam, AIADMK, and Congress to condemn the remarks.

Thereafter, based on several complaints the police charged Kannan with causing public fear, promoting enmity between different groups, and other offences, and he was arrested on August 15.

Kannan filed a petition before the High Court after a Sessions court denied him bail, a few days ago.
