'Sairaab' Actor Rohit Chandel Granted Bail In POCSO Case; Brother Confirms Details
TV actor Rohit Chandel was granted bail by a Mumbai Sessions Court in a POCSO case involving allegations of stalking and assault of a 16-year-old girl
Television actor Rohit Chandel has been granted bail by a Mumbai Sessions Court in connection with a case registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, following allegations of stalking, harassment and assault involving a 16-year-old girl.
Special Judge Shashikala S Nagur granted Chandel bail.
Chandel, known for his roles in television shows including Pandya Store and Kashibai Bajirao Ballal, had been in custody for nearly two months. He is expected to be released on September 11, 2026, after completion of the necessary legal and administrative formalities.
According to reports, the court granted bail on September 10, following the rejection of an earlier bail plea.
The case was registered at Ghatkopar Police Station. Chandel was arrested by the Mumbai Police on July 10 from his residence in Dahisar and was subsequently produced before a special POCSO court, which remanded him to police custody.
Allegations against Actor
As per the FIR, Chandel allegedly made repeated phone calls to the minor from his personal number and other mobile numbers despite her objections.
The complaint further alleged that on July 5, the actor stopped the girl near her housing society, followed her, engaged in a verbal altercation, abused her and assaulted her.
In addition to the POCSO Act, Chandel was booked under Sections 78 and 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), relating to stalking and voluntarily causing hurt.
Earlier Bail plea rejected
Chandel had earlier sought bail, with reports indicating that discrepancies in the case documents had become a point of concern. The reported discrepancies included the description of his occupation as “businessman” instead of actor, an alleged error in recording his religion and an incorrect reference to his marital status in his medical records.
The court reportedly took note of the discrepancy concerning his marital status. His lawyer argued that the errors in the official documents should not affect the merits of the case. However, his second bail plea was rejected on July 22, after the minor complainant appeared before a judicial magistrate to record her statement.
Following the grant of bail, Chandel’s family issued a statement expressing relief and gratitude towards the court and those who supported the actor during his custody. The family maintained that Chandel is innocent and said it continues to have faith in the judicial process.
The criminal proceedings will continue before the appropriate court, where the allegations and defence will be considered on their merits.
