UBT Leader and Member of Parliament Sanjay Raut has reportedly been granted bail after being sentenced to 15 days in jail in a defamation case filed by Medha Somaiya, wife of BJP Leader Kirit Somaiya.

Judicial Magistrate Aarti Kulkarni sentenced Raut to 15 days of imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹25,000. Soon after the pronouncement, Raut’s lawyer moved an application seeking suspension of the sentence to file an appeal.

The magistrate allowed the application and suspended the sentence for 30 days.

Medha Somaiya had filed a defamation case under Sections 499 and 500 of the IPC against Sanjay Raut for making defamatory remarks about her family.

In her complaint, she alleged that Raut made baseless and false accusations against both her and her husband, claiming they were involved in a ₹100 crore scam related to the construction of public toilets at the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation.

Medha Somaiya claimed that Sanjay Raut published defamatory remarks in the Shiv Sena mouthpiece 'Saamna' without verifying the statements.

In her complaint, she sought an unconditional apology from Raut and requested a restraining order to prevent him from publishing, printing, or circulating any further defamatory remarks against her.
