In a unique convergence of law and cinema, the Supreme Court of India welcomed actor and producer Aamir Khan for a special screening of his film "Laapataa Ladies” on Friday, August 9, 2024. The screening took place in the Supreme Court auditorium, with the evening dedicated to exploring themes of gender equality featured in the movie.
Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud greeted Khan warmly, reflecting on the invitation extended to the actor. “I didn’t want a stampede in the court, but we are pleased to welcome a very special guest…I said, why don't you drop into the court and see the proceedings in real life?,” the CJI remarked. Amir Khan witnessed the court proceedings for about 30 minutes.
Attorney General R Venkataramani quipped, "It's a star-studded court today!" as Khan sat in the front row, observing the proceedings. The screening, organised by the Supreme Court's communications division, is part of the court's 75th-anniversary celebrations and the Chief Justice's gender sensitisation program.
Following the screening, Khan, accompanied by director Kiran Rao, engaged with the audience in a discussion. Rao expressed gratitude towards the Supreme Court for screening the film, stating “Am deeply honoured”.
The movie tells the story of two lost ladies and aligns with the Chief Justice's initiatives on gender equality and was screened in the Auditorium at C Block, Administrative Building Complex.
