The Delhi High Court on Monday stayed the Trial Court's order which granted bail to former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a rioting and murder case linked to the 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots.

On Monday, Justice Yogesh Khanna issued notice to Kumar and sought his response on the petition by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that challenged the grant of bail passed by Additional Sessions Judge, Rouse Avenue District Court, Delhi, in a rioting and murder case lodged at Saraswati Police Station.

The SIT submitted that Kumar was involved in a heinous offence, some important witnesses are yet to be examined and if the respondent is released it may hamper the evidence.

It was further submitted that Kumar is already convicted in a similar matter and is in custody.

"In view of the above, let the notice of this petition be issued to the respondent through all modes returnable on 15.07.2022, and till then the impugned order dated 27.04.2022 shall remain stayed", Court ordered.
