Ahmedabad Court acquits Maya Kodnani, Babu Bajrangi and others accused in Naroda Gam massacre

Synopsis

In 2002, 11 Muslims were killed in a communal violence during a bandh called to protest the Godhra train burning in Naroda Gam.

Former Gujarat Minister Maya Kodnani & Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi along with 66 others were acquitted by an Ahmedabad Court today in the Naroda Gam massacre during the 2002 Godhra riots.

Kodnani and others were accused of killing 11 Muslims on February 28, 2002, a day after the Godhra train burning case.

Notably, a total of 86 were accused in the case, out of which 18 died in the intervening period.

Charges of murder, criminal conspiracy & rioting were framed against Kodnani and others.

The massacre at Naroda Gam was among the nine major 2002 communal riots cases investigated by the SIT and heard by special courts. Trial had started in 2010 and went on for 13 years with six judges presiding over it, examining 187 and 57 witnesses for the prosecution and defence, respectively.

About 182 prosecution witnesses were examined in the case. Home Minister Amit Shah had appeared as a defence witness for Kodnani in 2017.
