The Supreme Court of India has sought the Central Bureau of Investigation's response to the furlough plea filed by former Congress Councillor Balwan Khokhar who is serving life imprisonment in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case.
A bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and Sanjay Karol further observed that it may ask the competent authority to decide the matter.
Court has accordingly listed the matter for further hearing in April.
Along with Khokhar, former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar is also lodged in Tihar jail since their conviction in 2018.
Anti-Sikh riots had broken out in the country after the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards.
Khokhar was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the trial court in 2013. In 2018, Delhi High Court had also affirmed the trial court's order.
