"We are withdrawing the plea before Supreme Court as it is clashing with remand..", Court has been told
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has withdrawn his petition filed before the Supreme Court of India challenging his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate.
Notably, Kejriwal was arrested yesterday late evening.
Today, Senior Advocate AM Singhvi had first mentioned Kejriwal's plea before a CJI DY Chandrachud led bench. CJI had then asked him to approach the special bench Justice Sanjiv Khanna.
When Singhvi appeared before the bench, the special bench had already risen and Justice Khanna told him that the case would be taken up after regular matters were heard.
"The CJI asked him to mention before the special bench that was here, he told that the bench may get up by the time he comes to mention, but the CJI asked him to come here and mention, do not know what was his intention..", Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also told the bench.
Singhvi then came back to court later and informed the bench that the plea was being withdrawn.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had conducted searches at Delhi Chief Minister's residence yesterday following the Delhi High Court's decision to deny him protection from coercive action in an excise policy-related money laundering case.
A Bench comprising Justice Suresh Kumar Kait and Justice Manoj Jain denied interim protection to Kejriwal and listed his application for further consideration on April 22.
The case involves allegations of corruption and money laundering in the formulation and execution of Delhi's excise policy for 2021-22, which was later scrapped. Meanwhile, outside Kejriwal's residence, a crowd gathered, including AAP MLAs and party leaders, protesting the ED's actions. AAP leaders criticized the BJP and ED, alleging political conspiracy and misuse of power to target Kejriwal.
