“Attack on devotees a threat to sovereignty”: PIL in Supreme Court seeks NIA investigation into communal clashes on Hindu festivals

A plea has been filed by advocate and social activist Vineet Jindal in Supreme Court seeking direction to be issued to the central government to hand over the investigation of communal clashes that broke out in various states on the occasion of Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti to National Investigation Agency (NIA). The plea states that these clashes indicate involvement of international organizations to target Hindus across the country intent of trying to dis-balance the social structure of India.

According to the plea, the PIL under Article 32 of the Constitution has been filed as the petitioner is aggrieved  on account of multiple incidents of communal clashes happened in different states of the country on the auspicious occasion of Hanuman Jayanti and Ram Navami.

The plea states that clashes broke out in Jahangir Puri in Delhi on 16.04.2022 on the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti Celebration and during Ram Navami celebrations in the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh and in JNU campus during peaceful processions and celebration.

The plea further states that the devotees were targeted with gun shots and stone pelted which injured the devotees in the procession in several states leading to communal tension. According to the plea, acts of violence attacking the devotees during procession by firing and stone pelting and vandalising vehicles creating communal tension is a threat to the sovereignty of the country and instigate the Hindu community to retaliate as religion forms the essence of the values of the community.

The plea further states that in the light of the gravity of this matter and a series of events across the country in seven different states indicate the involvement of terror funding with possible links of ISI and other anti national and international organisations to target Hindus across the country with the intent of creating an imbalance.

According to the plea these attacks could not have been mere coincidences and it is coincident, it is imperative that it needs to be investigated by the National investigation agency (NIA) which was formed for the purpose to Investigate matter related to terror activities in India. The plea further states that the petitioner has filed a complaint with the NIA in this regard.
