Bailable warrant issued against Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut after BJP Leader's wife moves Mumbai Court alleging defamation

Synopsis

The Court had observed that the accused Sanjay Raut's statements caused harm to the complainant's reputation.

As a result of Sanjay Raut's failure to appear before the court in connection with a defamation suit brought by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya's wife Medha Somaiya, the Mumbai Court issued a bailable warrant against him on Monday.

Earlier, the Metropolitan Magistrate had issued summon against Raut to appear before the Court today.

The bench while issuing the warrant adjourned the matter to July 18 after neither Raut nor his lawyer appeared before the court today. Somaiya's lawyer had requested the bench to issue a warrant against Raut.

The magistrate had previously noted that the documents and video clips that were produced on record and used as the basis for the summons. It was prima facie showed that the accused had made defamatory statements against Medha in order for them to be seen by public at large and read in newspapers.

The Court had further observed that the accused Sanjay Raut's statements caused harm to the complainant's reputation.

It has been alleged that Medha and her husband were the targets of Raut's slanderous and utterly unfounded accusations that they were complicit in an Rs. 100 crore scam involving the building and upkeep of some public toilets that fell under the purview of the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation.
