BREAKING| CJI Khanna Forwards Report on Justice Yashwant Varma to the President

In a major development, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna on Thursday, May 8, forwarded to the President of India the report submitted by the three-member committee constituted to investigate allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma, from whose residence a large amount of unaccounted cash was recovered.
CJI Sanjiv Khanna has also forwarded Justice Yashwant Varma’s response to the President of India.
According to a press release issued by the top court, "The Chief Justice of India, in terms of the In-House Procedure, has written to Hon’ble the President of India and Hon’ble the Prime Minister of India enclosing therewith copy of the 3-Member Committee report dated 03.05.2025 along with the letter/response dated 06.05.2025 received from Mr Justice Yashwant Varma".
Recently, the Supreme Court-appointed in-house committee indicted the presence of unaccounted cash at the residence of the former Delhi High Court Judge.
Media reports suggest that Justice Varma has been asked to resign from his position as judge of the Allahabad High Court. In case he fails to do so, he will have to face impeachment proceedings.
The three-member committee submitted its report to Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna on May 4, 2025.
According to a press statement released by the top court, "The three-member Committee consisting of Mr Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana, Mr Justice G.S. Sandhawalia, Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh and Ms Justice Anu Sivaraman, Judge of the High Court of Karnataka, constituted for conducting an inquiry into the allegations against Mr Justice Yashwant Varma, a sitting Judge, has submitted its report dated 03.05.2025 to the Chief Justice of India on 04.05.2025."
On March 25, the Supreme Court-appointed in-house committee began its probe into the case. Chief Justice of India (CJI).
Sanjiv Khanna had constituted a three-member committee to examine the allegations against Justice Varma.
On March 24, the Supreme Court Collegium officially recommended the repatriation of Delhi High Court Judge, Justice Yashwant Varma, to the Allahabad High Court.
The official statement issued by the Collegium stated, "The Supreme Court Collegium in its meetings held on 20th and 24th March 2025 has recommended repatriation of Mr. Justice Yashwant Varma, Judge, High Court of Delhi, to the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad."
Earlier, the Supreme Court released a video and reports related to the cash controversy. The court also disclosed the findings of an internal investigation along with Justice Yashwant Varma’s detailed response. However, Justice Yashwant Varma in his response dismissed all the allegations, stating that neither he nor his family members had any involvement with the cash allegedly recovered from his residence.
