The Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana on Wednesday slammed the Central Government over the issue of vacant positions at various tribunals while asking the Attorney General KK Venugopal whether the central government is "serious enough" to make appointments at various Tribunals.

A bench of CJI NV Ramana, Justice AS Bopanna and Justice Hima Kohli noted that everyday requests are being made regarding the non-availability of members at the tribunals, and that matters could not be heard before the tribunals.

CJI Ramana called upon Attorney General KK Venugopal to put out the stand of the Central Government over the issue clearly.

Venugopal submitted that an affidavit will be filed in this regard and the matter may be kept for hearing tomorrow.

It may be noted that a batch of petitions seeking filling up of vacancies in various Tribunals are pending before the apex court.

Today at the end of the board the bench enquired about the status of the filling up of vacancies at various tribunals, and sought answers from the central government regarding the issue as several matters are being mentioned before the bench over the non-availability of members at the various tribunals.

The bench noted that the pending matters over the issue will be listed within a week or two.
