The Delhi High Court on Friday expressed hope that the Indian Olympics Association (IOA) would increase the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) quota for participation in the Common Wealth Games (CWG) 2022.

Justice Jasmeet Singh of the Delhi High Court on Friday has sought a response from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and has expressed hope that the IOA would increase the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) quota for the participation in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022, so that additional athletes, including Tejaswin Shankar, could also take part in the event.

This development came after the Counsel for AFI submitted that they have sent a representation to IOA to increase their quota so that other deserving players like Shankar could be considered for participation.

The court was hearing a plea moved by High Jumper Tejaswin Shankar, challenging his exclusion from participating in CWG, despite completing the qualification standard set by the AFI.

Earlier, this week the Court had directed the AFI to consider the case of Shankar’s name for the upcoming CWG 2022.

“Suffice to say at this moment, that this court is hopeful that the Indian Olympic Association would increase the AFI quota for participation in the Commonwealth Games, so that all the five additionally selected athletes are included in the Commonwealth Contingent,” Court observed.

Accordingly, the matter has been listed for further consideration on July 4.
