Delhi HC Grants Interim Bail to Praveen Dabas on Medical Grounds in Sagar Dhankar Murder Case

The Delhi High Court has recently granted interim bail on medical grounds to Praveen Dabas, an accused in the 2021 murder case of junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar.
Dabas, along with wrestler Sushil Kumar and others, is facing trial in connection with the death of junior wrestler Sagar Dhankar. The incident took place on May 4, 2021, when Dhankar was allegedly assaulted at Chhatrasal Stadium. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Justice Sanjeev Narula, however, granted bail on medical grounds to Dabas after considering the reports submitted by the Jail Superintendent.
As per the report, Dabas is suffering from chronic kidney disease, asthma (post anti-tubercular treatment), and other associated ailments.
The High Court also took note of the Chief Medical Officer-in-Charge, which stated that despite regular follow-up and treatment, the symptoms of the accused have persisted and his condition has deteriorated, further impacting his ability to carry out daily activities.
It was also noted that Dabas is currently undergoing treatment at Safdarjung Hospital; however, he continues to suffer from persistent breathing difficulties and requires specialised care.
Taking note of his medical condition, the Court directed that treatment must be provided by the Orthopaedic Department at Dr. BSA Hospital and the Neurology Department at GB Pant Hospital.
"Accordingly, the applicant is directed to be released on interim bail for a period of two weeks from the date of his release, upon furnishing a bail bond for a sum of ₹25,000 with two sureties of the like amount, to the satisfaction of the concerned Jail Superintendent, Trial Court, or Duty MM," the Court ordered.
In March this year, the High Court had granted bail to Olympic medalist wrestler Sushil Kumar in the Sagar Dhankar murder case after he spent more than three and a half years in custody.
In October 2022, Delhi court had framed charges against the accused persons namely, Kumar, Prince, Ajay Kumar, Mohit, Manjeet, Gulab, Bhupender, Rohit Malik, Bijender, Anirudh Dahiya, Subhash, Gaurav Loura, Surjeet Grewal, Anil Dhiman, Praveen Dabas, Praveen, Rahul, and Parveen Dabas under Section 302 (murder) read with Section 34 (common intention).
