The Supreme Court on Thursday informed Senior Advocate and Supreme Court Bar Association President Vikas Singh that, the Jharkhand High Court has already taken suo motu cognizance to examine the killing of Dhanbad Additional District and Sessions judge Uttam Ananad and therefore it won’t examine the same.
Today, during the course of hearing before the Bench led by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud in Supreme Court, SCBA President raised his concern over the alleged murder of the Additional District Judge Uttam Anand in Dhanbad on Wednesday and urged for CBI probe into the matter.
“It is a brazen attack on judiciary. There is even a CCTV footage which should be taken up,” said Vikas Singh
To this Justice Chandrchud asked Senior Advocate Vikas Singh to mention it before the Chief Justice of India.
“If judiciary has to be independent we have to be very stern & take action for protecting the powers of the judicial officers,” said Singh
Senior Advocate Vikas Singh then proceeded to mention the matter before the CJI.
“This is an important matter wherein independence of judiciary is at threat,” informed Singh to CJI
“I spoke to the Chief Justice of the High Court. The High Court has issued notice to the police & district officials. They are hearing the matter today. Let them handle it. Does not require interference by us. I have spoken to the Chief Justice this morning,” said CJI
It is pertinent to note here that, the Chief Justice Ravi Ranjan of the Jharkhand High Court on Thursday has taken suo motu cognizance of the death of a district judge in Dhanbad and has issued orders asking the SSP, Dhanbad to remain present before the Court today.
The judge was killed in Dhanbad city of Jharkhand after being hit by an autorickshaw while he was on a morning walk on Wednesday morning. The incident took place at Randhir Verma Chowk near Dhanbad district court under Sadar police station area.
The CCTV footage of the incident is surfaced which suggests that autorickshaw hit the judge from the back and fled from the spot. The judge was rushed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
