Another FIR against Twitter MD, Manish Maheshwari in Madhya Pradesh. The FIR has been filed against the platform for misrepresenting the Indian map.
The FIR was registered on Tuesday by the Madhya Pradesh State Cyber Cell under IT Act. The FIR was registered by BJP spokesperson Durgesh Keswani.
“A First Information Report was registered against Twitter India Managing Director Manish Maheshwari under Section 505(2) of the Indian Penal Code over displaying a distorted map of India,” Gurkaran Singh, superintendent of police of Madhya Pradesh’s Cyber Crime[1]
As per reports, the misrepresented map was available on Twitter’s website since May. As stated in the report,
“The map in question was displayed in the “Tweep Life” section of Twitter’s careers page. Although it appears that the incorrect map has been on Twitter’s website since May (MediaNama verified this by checking the archived version of the site), the issue was brought into the spotlight only yesterday. The map was removed within hours after the company faced public backlash and the government said that it was looking into the matter.”[2]
Apart from the case in Madhya Pradesh, Twitter is also sued in Uttar Pradesh for misrepresentation of the Indian map. FIR in Uttar Pradesh is also filed against Amrita Tripathi, the head of New Partnerships at Twitter India, along with Twitter India’s MD Manish Maheshwari.
Another case by the National Commissioner for Protection of Child Rights, for the availability of child pornographic material, was also filed against Twitter, on Tuesday.
Currently, apart from being sued for misrepresentation of Indian map, Twitter is also sued in Uttar Pradesh in connection with tweets containing ‘provocative’ video. The Ghaziabad Police had filed the FIR after Twitter failed to remove the said tweets.
Twitter is also criticised currently, with respect to non-compliance with the new IT Rules, 2021.
