Justice BV Nagarathna Appointed As Supreme Court Legal Services Committee Chairperson

Justice Nagarathna is appointed Chairman of SCLSC, which is an effort to provide legal aid and assistance to the marginalized and weaker sections of the Society.

Justice Nagarathna has been appointed in place of Justice JK Maheshwari, who recently retired.

Justice Bangalore Venkataramiah Nagarathna, Judge, Supreme Court of India, has been appointed as Chairperson of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee with effect from 29 June, 2026.

In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3A of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, the Chief Justice of India has nominated Justice Nagarathna, as Chairperson of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee.

Justice Nagarathna has been appointed on account of Justice JK Maheshwari demitting the office on account of his retirement.

The Supreme Court Legal Services Committee has been constituted under Section 3A of the Act, for providing free and competent Legal Services to the weaker sections of the Society in the cases which fall under the jurisdiction of Hon’ble Supreme Court of India. The Committee consists of - a sitting Judge of Supreme Court, who is the Chairman and 9 members nominated by the Chief Justice of India.

Notably, after being appointed on 18th February, 2008 as Additional Judge of Karnataka High Court and Permanent Judge on 17th February, 2010 Justice Nagarathna had also been the President of Karnataka Judicial Academy and President of the Bangalore Mediation Centre, Bengaluru.

Justice Nagarathna was elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court of India on 31 st August 2021 and is due to retire on 29th October, 2027.
