Justice V Mohana At Madras Bar Association Event: "Overwhelmed, My First Event Post Becoming Supreme Court Judge"

Supreme Court judge, Justice V Mohana today said she was overwhelmed and honored to attend an event organised by the Madras Bar Association as it is her first one after taking oath as a judge of the Supreme Court.

"Really feeling very overwhelmed and honored to be felicitated by the Madras Bar Association in the first function after taking charge of the Office of the Supreme Court judge. It’s a great privilege today that I am standing before you, and in fact, it was unimaginable as a student that I would have ever thought that I would be coming and standing before you and inaugurating an endowment lecture series," Justice Mohana said.

Justice Mohana was felicitated by the Madras Bar Association in the presence of the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court SA Dharmadikari, on the occasion of the inauguration of endowment lectures to commemorate legal luminaries MK Nambyar, VP Raman, R Krishnamurthi and M Subramaniam.

Justice Mohana fondly remembered her time at the Madras bar and said, "Actually, Tamil Nadu and especially Coimbatore and Madras have been extremely kind to me in my formative years and subsequently also. From the beginning recently till last month in May, the maximum number of work that I have done is all from Tamil Nadu and I am very proud to say that. My growth development and encouragement, I owe it all to the Coimbatore bar and the Madras Bar Association."

The newly appointed Supreme Court judge also said that the lecture series would be beneficial to the bar and the Madras Bar association will hopefully continue with their developmental activities.

Justice Mohana took oath as judge of Supreme Court on June 2 wherein five judges in total took oath and formally assumed office as judges of the Supreme Court.

Notably in separate notifications issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice, the Centre in My had cleared the appointments of Senior Advocate Venkita Subramani Mohana, Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, and Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.

Justice Mohana graduated from Coimbatore Law College, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, as part of the first batch of five years law course (1983-1988) and obtained the degree of Bachelor of Laws. She had enrolled as an Advocate on the roll of the Bar Council, Tamil Nadu, on 11th November, 1988 and transferred later to the roll of Bar Council of Delhi.

Prior to being appointed as a Supreme Court judge, Justice Mohana served as a nominated member of the Gender Sensitization and Internal Complaints Committee (GSICC) of the Supreme Court, a member of the Supreme Court Middle Income Group Legal Aid Committee and a Member of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee.

She also conducted several mediations including Commercial Mediation through the Mediation Centre as well as in other cases as appointed by the Supreme Court and International Arbitration and rendered awards as an Arbitrator appointed by the Supreme Court.
