Parliamentary Affairs Minister said that all political parties are in agreement on the matter

More than 100 Members of Parliament have signed a notice seeking the initiation of impeachment proceedings against Justice Yashwant Varma, currently posted at the Allahabad High Court. Confirming the development, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that all political parties are in agreement on the matter. The notice is expected to be taken up by the Business Advisory Committee. Notably, the monsoon session of the Parliament is ongoing.

The move comes in the wake of a Supreme Court in-house inquiry report, which found Justice Varma guilty of misconduct. The inquiry was initiated after a significant amount of cash, partly burnt, was recovered from his official residence in Delhi following a fire. The final report, submitted on May 3, 2025, by a three-member committee, concluded that the charges were “proved” and recommended his removal from office.

The Chief Justice of India subsequently forwarded the recommendation to the President and Prime Minister on May 8.

Justice Varma recently approached the Supreme Court, challenging the in-house inquiry process, alleging procedural violations. The judge, who has served for over 11 years and was transferred to the Delhi High Court in 2021 before being repatriated to Allahabad in April 2025, has contended that the in-house procedure has been misused to create an extra-constitutional route for judicial removal that circumvents Article 124 and Article 218 of the Constitution.

Justice Yashwant Varma has refused to resign.
