[Kanhaiya Lal Beheading] NIA Court extends police remand of three accused

Synopsis

Kanhaiya Lal was beheaded for allegedly expressing support for Nupur Sharma, the former BJP leader, in a social media post.

A National Investigation Agency (NIA) court has extended the police custody of three of the seven men accused in the Kanhaiyalal Beheading in Udaipur up to Saturday i.e. July 16 and sent the remaining four to judicial custody till August 1.

On Tuesday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) produced all seven accused before the designated NIA court amid tight security.

Riaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad were remanded in NIA custody after allegedly killing Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor, with a cleaver on June 28 to avenge an insult to Islam.

Farhad Mohammad Sheikh, the last man arrested in the case and described by the NIA as a "close criminal associate," was also remanded in police custody.

"The court extended Ghouse Mohammad, Riaz, and Farhad's remand until July 16. They will be held in NIA custody until August 1, while the four other accused have been sentenced to prison,” T P Sharma, the special public prosecutor, stated.

According to Sharma, the accused had previously been remanded to police custody until July 12.

Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad were both apprehended in Rajsamand shortly after the crime. They had already shared a graphic video of the murder on social media.

Mohammad Mohsin, Wasim Ali, Asif, and another man named Mohsin were placed in judicial custody until August 1.

Mohsin and Asif were arrested for their alleged involvement in the murder conspiracy two days after the murder accused of spying on Kanhaiya Lal's shop.

After taking over the case from the Rajasthan Police, the NIA re-registered it under the anti-terror Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act on June 29.

The case was initially filed at Udaipur's Dhanmandi police station.
