A complaint has been filed in National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Delhi by one Allahabad High Court advocate Gajendra Singh Yadav in connection with the communal clash that took place in the Becon Ganj area of Kanpur.
Yadav stated that on Friday, June 3, 2022 a communal clash took place between the two sides over the closure of the market during the Friday prayers in the Becon Ganj area of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Subsequently, the clash turned into a riot.
In the mutual quarrel, stones were pelted from both sides and the police administration was facing a lot of difficulty in controlling the situation, stated Yadav.
Yadav further alleged that later, after taking full control of the situation, the police administration took decisive steps against the anti-social elements and issued a list of 40 accused persons with their pictures, who were allegedly involved in the ruckus.
As per Yadav's complaint, on going through the list, he observed that the police administration had unilaterally targeted only one sect i.e. Muslim side, whereas the quarrel took place between people from both the sects equally.
Apart from this, Yadav alleged that the aforementioned list which was released in all the newspapers as well as in the media had used the word “rioter”, whereas these people are “only accused” and “not criminals”.
Thus, Yadav contended that the action of the police and the media has been tainted by prejudice. He further stated that the same is violative of fundamental rights under Article 21 of the Constitution of India.
Therefore, Yadav has sought proper investigation into the matter and has requested the Commission to take appropriate action.
