Vijay Aggarwal, Mehul Choksi's Counsel, Reportedly Detained In London Over Immigration Violations; Cash Found In Mayfair Property

Large amount of cash was reportedly found at a Mayfair property where Indian lawyer Vijay Aggarwal was reportedly detained
Indian criminal lawyer Vijay Aggarwal has reportedly been arrested in London over allegations concerning possible immigration violations and the reported discovery of a substantial amount of cash at a property in Mayfair.
According to reports, Aggarwal had been detained by British immigration authorities for around three days. The reported detention is said to be connected to a Mayfair property where he was allegedly residing or working.
The allegations include claims that Aggarwal was undertaking professional work in the United Kingdom without the required work permit and may have breached other immigration regulations.
The matter reportedly came to the attention of British authorities following a complaint allegedly made by the landlord of the Mayfair property in May. Immigration officials are subsequently said to have examined Aggarwal’s activities in the UK.
However, no official document from the UK Home Office, Border Force, Metropolitan Police or a British court has so far been made public confirming Aggarwal’s identity, arrest or detention.
Reports further claim that three to four junior lawyers were present at the property when the alleged inspection took place.
A significant amount of cash was also reportedly found during the inspection. However, the precise amount, ownership and source of the cash have not been established.
The circumstances have raised questions over whether Aggarwal had the necessary authorisation to undertake professional work in the UK and the nature and duration of his alleged activities there.
Reported connection to Mehul Choksi
Aggarwal is known for representing fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi in legal proceedings in India and abroad.
Court records have previously reflected Aggarwal’s appearance as Choksi’s counsel before the Bombay High Court. He also represented Choksi after the latter was arrested in Belgium in April 2025.
Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are accused by Indian authorities of involvement in the Punjab National Bank fraud case involving approximately US$1.8 billion. Both have denied the allegations.
Separate reports have now made allegations concerning Aggarwal’s possible role in managing Choksi’s undisclosed or alleged “black money”. These allegations have not been independently established.
At present, the reported London detention, the alleged immigration violations and the reported cash discovery remain subject to confirmation from the relevant British authorities.
