A division bench of  Chief Justice Ravi Vijaykumar Malimath and Justice Vishal Mishra was hearing a petition moved by Indore-based NGO ‘Lokhit Abhiyan Samiti’ which opposed the cutting of trees and digging up of the mountain for the construction of the statue.

The Madhya Pradesh High Court, Jabalpur Bench has stayed the ongoing construction work of the 108-feet high statue of Adi Shankaracharya, which is to be built on Mandhata Parvat hill facing the river Narmada at Omkareshwar in the State’s Khandwa district.

The court was hearing a petition moved by Indore-based NGO ‘Lokhit Abhiyan Samiti’ which opposed the cutting of trees and digging up of the mountain for the construction of the statue.

A division bench of Chief Justice Ravi Vijaykumar Malimath and Justice Vishal Mishra issued a notice to the State government and sought a reply on the damage, if any, to the nature and neglect of public faith in the project.

Court further sought a reply from the Khandwa district collector, DFO, revenue officer, and the State Archeological Department.

The petitioner contended that the statue named ‘Statue of Oneness’, would cause damage to the natural beauty of the area.

Court ordered a stay on the construction work, until the next hearing.
