The CJI expressed tremendous gratitude while speaking at a farewell event that was graced by the incoming CJI Sanjeev Khanna, Attorney General R. Venkataramani, and SCBA President Kapil Sibal among others
While speaking at a farewell event organised by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA), the outgoing Chief Justice of India responded to criticisms, and said, "My shoulders are broad enough to accept all the criticism."
In doing so, the CJI also responded to the online trolling, saying, 'I'm sure all of you are aware of the amount of trolling I have received. I am probably the most trolled judge across the system.' With a touch of humor, he added, 'I don’t know what will happen to the people who troll me on Monday, will they be rendered unemployed?'
Reflecting on the public nature of his role, the CJI acknowledged that he exposed his personal life to public knowledge. However, during his address, he reiterated his belief in transparency, affirming the principle that 'sunlight is the best disinfectant.'
As the CJI emphasised his commitment to transparency, he also expressed gratitude to members of the bar, and said, "The bar has responded with tremendous support for all the initiatives we have undertaken, and my colleagues have also shown." remarkable support.
Justice Chandrachud expressed his eternal gratitude to the collegium and said he never had a difference of opinion. We never left a meeting with a sense of rancor, never lost sight of the fact that we are not here with personal agendas but to subserve interest of the institution, he added.
Reminiscing about his time as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, the CJI shared fond memories. He recollected being told that the bar at Allahabad could be difficult, but his experience was quite the opposite. One thing I learned at the Allahabad High Court is that, as long as you are objective with the bar, they accept you, he said.
Expressing gratitude to his family, he recounted his mother's advice "She told me when I was growing up, that I have named you Dhananjay, but the 'Dhan', is not wealth, I want you to acquire knowledge...".
"I was allowed to LIVE MY OWN CHIDLHOOD, without COMPELLING ME TO LIVE THE DREAM OF MY PARENTS..", the CJI added.
