The Supreme Court on Wednesday slammed Medical Counselling Committee for not filling up the remaining 1456 vacant seats in medical colleges in 2021-22 session. This transpired in a plea seeking direction to conduct a special stray round in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Post Graduate) counseling for the vacant seats.
A bench of Justice MR Shah and Justice Aniruddha Bose said, "If the students are not given admission, we'll pass orders for compensation for playing with the future of the Students."
The bench added, "Even if there is one vacant seat, it should not go unfilled."
The bench asked the Committee, "What you'll get by keeping the seats vacant when we need doctors? Is there any responsibility or not? Let the Higher Authority present tomorrow, we'll pass orders."
The counsel appearing for the Committee sought an adjournment stating that he is led by Senior Advocate Balbir Singh who is not available today. However, the bench asked the counsel to call him as the matter is very important.
Later, Justice Shah said, "It is the future which is at stake, first of all, you do the study and then you give exams and if you get 99 percentage then there is admission problem and then after that there is Super Speciality problem. Do you understand the situation of the Students?."
The bench asked the authority to file an affidavit informing them about the position of vacant seats and why they were not filled up by today. The matter will be taken up tomorrow for further hearing.
